Moore Street

Was anyone else watching Creedons Cities last night? He was in Dublin (which is why I mention it) and the piece he did on Moore Street really got me. I walked down Moore Street myself the other day, and there’s no other way to descibe it’s current state than as a run-down part of town. What was not only a critical landmark in the birth of our nations rebellion to be free, but also a famous bustling market of vibrant fruit and veg sellers, is a decaying, delapidated street. Why can’t this part of the Dublin, integral to our city’s history, be re-energised as a worldwide famous market with quality fruit and veg (I’d buy there before my local supermarket any day), and the buildings turned into a national monument that people can go to visit? Right now, it’s just a string of tacky internet call shops and second-hand phone shops.

If you feel strongly about 16 Moore Street being saved as an important heritage monument, you can sign a petition here.

As a side note: as I was walking along Moore Street last week, I saw a man dressed very handsomely in a tux with another man, similarly dressed, beside him. There was a microphone in front of him and he began to sing, tenor-style, in honour of a butcher working in FX Buckleys behind him. Not something you see everyday.
